RAMS Surface Characteristic Datasets

NOTE: There are 2 versions of most datasets available, labeled VFM and HDF5:
  • VFM - MUST be used with RAMS v4.4 and earlier (also with v5.0x beta versions).
  • HDF5 - can only be used with RAMS v6. (VFM will also work with v6, but this will be phased out in coming versions.)

    • SST
Contains the global monthly climatological sea surface temperature data for RAMS version 4.3 at 1 degree resolution (about 100km).
      Global set (0.8 MB) VFM
      Global set (1.1 MB) HDF5

    • Landuse
Contains the global landuse data for RAMS version 4.3 at 30s, or about 1km resolution. Each file contains 5x5 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest corner. The USGS dataset is based on 1-km Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data spanning April 1992 through March 1993.
      Global set (28.1 MB) VFM
      Global set (31.8 MB) HDF5

    • Topography (1km)
Contains the global USGS topography dataset at 30s, or about 1km resolution. Each file contains 5x5 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest corner.
      Global set (247.8 MB) VFM
      Global set (296.7 MB) HDF5

    • Topography (20km)
Contains the global USGS topography dataset at 10min, or about 20km resolution. Each file contains 20x20 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest corner.
      Global set (0.5 Mb) VFM

    • NDVI
Contains the global monthly NDVI data for RAMS at 30s, or about 1km resolution. Each file contains 10x10 degree blocks, with the filename denoting the southwest corner. The data were produced by the USGS and are from the years of 1992-1993. Each monthly file is about 100 MB and contains the global set for that month. The HEADER file is required and should be placed in the directory tree at the same level as the month directories.
      HDF5, ONLY FOR RAMS v6

HEADER   Jan    Feb    Mar    Apr    May
Jun    Jul    Aug    Sep    Oct    Nov    Dec

    • Microphysics
Contains an example microphysical collection table (with all GNU values == 2). See the RAMS namelist documentation for details.
      Micro file

If you download individual files for a dataset, you will need to download the header file (e.g., ELHEADER is the header file for the topography dataset).

All files (except the micro file) are in the RAMS standard blocked format for input. The files are compressed with gzip. gunzip the files before you use them.

Any missing file in the global datasets indicates that all of the area that would be contained in that file is covered by ocean - and as this is assumed by the model there is no need to have these redundant files in the datasets.
